Captain Gary L. Herod
Memorial Plaza

Brays Bayou Association Meeting
Tuesday May 21st at 7:00pm
5601 S. Braeswood 77096
The ERJCC (Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center)

The Hero
The time is here!  After lengthy delays, much due to the Covid backlog, the Captain Gary L. Herod Memorial Plaza’s (CGLHMP) time has come… and so has your time come to help out with the community participation part!   Also, at the meeting we’ll have the Herod Hero Memorial Bench… which is another super cool story, more on that in a bit.

$750,000
We are ecstatic that Harris County Commissioner Lesley Brionesrecognizes what this tribute memorial, along with what the forthcoming area trails mean to the Greater Brays Bayou community, and in in doing so has appropriated $750,000 to go towards the projects!

 The Designer
Joining us will be the designer of the CGLHMP, Dan Howse, the Houston Parks Board’s Asset Project Manager.  Dan will talk to us about the planned features, some of which will be unique to the Brays Bayou Greenway, the anticipated timelines and other related information.  Oh, and of course take questions.  Another fascinating tidbit is the construction of the plaza will be accompanied by a new trail segment along the northside of Brays Bayou between Chimney Rock and Hillcroft.  This trail will mirror what is already in place on the southside of the bayou, including the junction at the Atwell Pedestrian Bridge.  With the CGLHMP as a destination and the new trail segment, I see this becoming one of the more utilized sections of the Brays Bayou Greenway.

The Craftsmen
Come and check out the fabulously crafted and extremely handsome Herod Hero Bench… the wood for the bench came from the Herod Hero Tree that once stood along Beechnut in front of Meyerland Plaza.  The Woodworkers Club of Houston displayed great honor in collecting a large section of the tree and converting the bulk wood to lumber to be used in the creation of the bench and other keepsakes for the Herod family.  We’ll have more on that at a future event, but this meeting is a perfect opportunity to admire the workmanship and get your picture taken with the Hero Bench!

Flood Control Talk
We’ll have updates from the Harris County Flood Control District regarding the latest on all the “in progress” and possible upcoming projects.

Baby Herod Hero Trees/Donors
We’ll wrap things up with a brainstorming session… We are looking for suggestions on how to maximize recognition of the individual donors to Herod Memorial Plaza and what to do with the 31 Baby Herod Hero Trees.  The Baby Trees that are no longer baby trees, with some of them reaching well over 10 feet!

We look forward to seeing everyone on the 21st!
