HOUSTON [June 6, 2017] – To kick off summer and fall registration, Houston Community College (HCC) Brays Oaks Center is hosting a “Block Information Party”. The open house will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 27, at the HCC Brays Oaks Center.

As part of the open house, HCC Southwest Student Services will set up special admissions, advising, and financial aid areas to make it as easy as possible for students and the community to register for classes.

The event will highlight all the services available at HCC Brays Oaks Center. Experts will be available to answer questions about new HCC classes and programs offered close to home. The event is an opportunity for participants to register early to avoid long lines, while having some fun thrown in for good measure.

“We hope the students and the community enjoy the convenience of the one-stop registration shop at the HCC ‘Block Information Party,’” said HCC Southwest Dean of Student Success Matias Garza. “We want them to have a pleasing student experience, which means we want the registration process to be quick, the advisors to be helpful, and the student to leave with a sense of accomplishment. In addition, when the students register early, they get the classes and times that fit their schedule.”

Participants can meet with representatives from numerous HCC programs, including health care, construction, business, and technology skills, as well as receive information about GED and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Surrounding businesses and community organizations also will be on hand to offer their services.

There will be games, prizes, a gift card raffle during each hour of the event, music, and much more. Swoop, the HCC mascot, also will be there to take photos and dance with the crowd.

The Kreole Soul Food Truck will provide a full menu for purchase and Southern Ice Cream will be providing free ice cream samples. Bee Busy Wellness Center is bringing a Mobile Unit to administer free HIV testing and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) counseling.

“This community has waited a long time to have a state-of-the-art HCC campus and we want the community to feel like it’s their campus,” said Lillie McIntyre, HCC Brays Oaks campus manager. “With help from the community and the surrounding businesses, we will fill every classroom to meet the growing needs of our neighbors.”

Registration is now open for summer and fall classes. The second 8-week summer semester starts Monday, July 10. The deadline to register for summer classes is Sunday, July 9. Fall classes start Monday, August 28 and the deadline to register for fall classes is Sunday, August 27. To sign up, go to: hccs.edu/apply.
